Delhi Mumbai Expressway vs Train: Time, Cost & Comfort Compared (2026)

India now has two high-speed options for the Delhi–Mumbai corridor: the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway (NE-4) and the established Rajdhani / Vande Bharat Express rail network. Both promise to cut the traditional travel time — but they suit different travellers, budgets, and trip types.

Here is a direct comparison to help you decide.

The Quick Answer

| Criteria | NE-4 Expressway | Train (Rajdhani) | |---|---|---| | Travel time | ~12 hrs (when fully open) | 15–17 hrs | | Current time (2026, partial open) | 18–22 hrs | 15–17 hrs | | Cost (one person) | ₹1,500–₹2,500 (toll + fuel) | ₹1,500–₹4,000 (3A–1A class) | | Flexibility | High — leave anytime | Fixed schedule | | Comfort | Your vehicle | Train compartment | | Luggage | Unlimited | Limited | | Group travel value | High (split cost) | Moderate | | Solo travel value | Low (full fuel/toll alone) | High |

Time Comparison

Train: Delhi to Mumbai

The fastest train on the Delhi–Mumbai route is the Rajdhani Express (12951/12952) — the Mumbai Rajdhani — which completes the journey in approximately 15 hours 55 minutes. The Vande Bharat Express, when running, covers the route in a similar timeframe.

There are also slower options (August Kranti, Paschim Express) that take 18–22 hours.

NE-4 Expressway: Delhi to Mumbai

When fully open (expected 2027–28), NE-4 will cover 1,386 km at an average of ~110 km/h, giving a travel time of ~12–13 hours. This would make the expressway faster than any train on this route.

In 2026, the Maharashtra section is still under construction. Drivers must use regular highways for part of Gujarat and all of Maharashtra, making the current total travel time approximately 18–22 hours — roughly equivalent to a slower train.

Verdict on time in 2026: Train wins marginally. Expressway will win once fully complete.

Cost Comparison

Train costs (per person, Delhi to Mumbai)

| Class | Approximate fare | |---|---| | Sleeper (SL) | ₹700–₹900 | | 3rd AC (3A) | ₹1,500–₹2,000 | | 2nd AC (2A) | ₹2,200–₹3,000 | | 1st AC (1A) | ₹3,500–₹5,000 |

Add ₹200–₹400 for food on board (Rajdhani includes meals in some classes).

Road costs (Delhi to Mumbai via NE-4)

For a private car:

| Item | Estimated Cost | |---|---| | Toll (full route, car) | ₹1,500–₹2,100 | | Fuel (1,386 km at 15 km/l, ₹103/litre) | ~₹9,500 | | Total | ~₹11,000–₹11,600 |

For a group of 4 people, split that cost: approximately ₹2,750–₹2,900 per person — competitive with 2A/1A train fares. For a solo traveller, the road option is significantly more expensive.

Verdict on cost:

  • Solo travel → train is much cheaper
  • Group of 3–4 → road becomes competitive, especially if you'd need multiple train tickets in AC classes

Comfort Comparison

Train comfort

  • No driving fatigue
  • Sleep overnight (Rajdhani departs late evening, arrives morning — ideal timing)
  • Meals included in some classes
  • Entertainment, charging points, observation lounge (Vande Bharat)
  • Predictable, climate-controlled environment
  • Limitation: Fixed seats/berths, limited privacy, no control over stops

Road comfort (NE-4)

  • Travel in your own vehicle — your space, your music, your schedule
  • Stop anywhere, anytime for food, sightseeing, or rest
  • Take luggage of any size (equipment, sporting goods, moving boxes)
  • Pets, strollers, unusual loads — all possible
  • Limitation: Requires a driver (or shared driving on long haul), significantly more tiring, 12+ hours is a long day

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the train if:

  • You're travelling solo or as a couple
  • You want to sleep through the journey and arrive fresh
  • You're budget-conscious
  • You don't need a car at the destination

Choose NE-4 expressway if:

  • You're travelling as a family or group of 3–4
  • You're carrying luggage that would be difficult on a train (large bags, equipment)
  • You want flexibility to stop in cities along the route (Jaipur, Kota, Vadodara)
  • You have a car at the destination or need it there
  • The Maharashtra section has opened (making the full journey ~12 hrs)

Best of both: Hybrid approach

Some travellers take the train one way (overnight, arriving fresh) and drive back after sightseeing at their own pace — combining the best of both modes for a multi-day trip.

What About Flight?

For reference: Delhi–Mumbai flight takes 2–2.5 hours and costs ₹3,000–₹8,000 per person (economy). For time-sensitive travel, flying is unbeatable. But you lose luggage flexibility, need to reach the airport, and can't stop along the way.

The expressway and train are the right choices when you either need your car in Mumbai, are doing a road trip, or want the journey itself to be part of the experience.
