India's longest expressway is no longer just a project on paper. National Expressway 4 (NE-4), the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, is partially open and growing fast — with new sections launching every few months. If you're planning a drive, here's everything you need to know before hitting the road in 2026.
What is NE-4?
NE-4 is an 8-lane, 1,386-kilometre access-controlled greenfield expressway connecting New Delhi to Mumbai across six states: Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) through a special purpose vehicle called DMEDL (DME Development Limited), it is designed for a top speed of 120 km/h with future expandability to 12 lanes.
The highway cuts the road distance between Delhi and Mumbai by approximately 180 km compared to existing routes, and reduces travel time from roughly 24 hours to around 12 hours once fully open.
What's Open in 2026?
As of June 2026, large portions of NE-4 are operational:
- Sohna–Dausa–Lalsot (246 km, Haryana + Rajasthan) — open since February 2023
- Full Madhya Pradesh section (244 km) — open since September 2023
- Vadodara–Bharuch (Gujarat) — open since February 2024
- Mithapur–Ballabhgarh stretch in Delhi (24 km) — open since November 2024
- Kota–Laban section in Rajasthan (80 km) — open since December 2024
- Bharuch–Kharel (Gujarat) — open since January 2026
- Vadodara–Godhra (Gujarat) — open since April 2026
- Kim–Enna section, Gujarat (63.5 km) — open since June 2026
The remaining Gujarat and Maharashtra sections are targeted for 2027–28 completion.
Toll Rates on NE-4
NE-4 uses a closed tolling system — your toll is calculated per kilometre based on your entry and exit interchange. You are not charged a flat fee at each plaza.
A temporary 50% toll reduction is currently in effect for sections under construction, approved by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways to compensate commuters for ongoing disruptions.
| Vehicle Category | Current Rate (per km) | |---|---| | Private Car / Jeep / Van | ₹1.10 – ₹1.50 | | Light Commercial Vehicle | ₹1.75 – ₹2.40 | | Bus / Truck (2-axle) | ₹3.75 – ₹5.10 | | Heavy Construction Machinery | ₹5.75 – ₹7.80 | | Over-sized Vehicles | ₹7.25 – ₹9.90 |
For a typical car journey on the Sohna–Dausa stretch (246 km), expect to pay approximately ₹270–₹370 at current reduced rates.
FASTag is Mandatory
All toll plazas on NE-4 are FASTag-only. There are no cash lanes. If your vehicle does not have a valid, funded FASTag linked, you will be charged double the standard toll rate at the exit plaza.
Make sure your FASTag balance is topped up before entering the expressway — you cannot pay at the plaza if your tag has insufficient balance.
FASTag Annual Pass — Worth Considering
If you use NE-4 or any NHAI national highway frequently, the FASTag Annual Pass launched in August 2025 is worth considering. For ₹3,000 per year, private cars, jeeps, and vans get up to 200 trips on all NHAI highways. If you drive the Sohna–Dausa route more than 7–8 times a year, the Annual Pass will save you money.
Speed Limits and Rules
| Zone | Speed Limit | |---|---| | Open highway | 120 km/h | | Near interchanges / toll plazas | 60 km/h | | Work zones | 40 km/h |
NE-4 has automated speed enforcement — average speed cameras monitor stretches between interchanges. Fines are issued automatically via the vehicle's registered FASTag.
Overtaking from the left, using the shoulder as a lane, and reversing on the expressway are all prohibited and carry heavy fines.
Entry and Exit Points
Because NE-4 is an access-controlled highway, you cannot enter or exit at arbitrary points. You must use a designated interchange. There are currently 33 interchanges across the operational sections.
Key interchanges include:
- Delhi (Mithapur/DND) — northern terminus
- Sohna — first major interchange in Haryana
- Dausa — end of the Haryana–Rajasthan opening stretch
- Kota — major Rajasthan interchange
- Ratlam / Indore connection — Madhya Pradesh
- Vadodara — Gujarat hub interchange
- Bharuch / Kim — Gujarat southern section
Use the Entry & Exit Points map on this site to find the right interchange for your origin and destination.
Wildlife Crossings
One of NE-4's most unique features is its 5 elevated wildlife crossings across four tiger reserves: Ranthambore, Sariska, Mukundara Hills, and Ramgarh Vishdhari in Rajasthan. These are the first dedicated animal overpasses on any Indian highway and allow tigers, leopards, and other wildlife to cross safely without approaching the road.
Drivers passing through the Rajasthan wildlife corridor sections will see overhead structures and green mesh barriers — these are the wildlife underpasses and overpasses. Do not stop on the road in these zones.
What to Expect on the Road
Wayside amenities are being developed alongside the highway — NHAI has planned 93 stops along the full route with fuel stations, EV charging (every 50 km), food courts, rest areas, trauma care centres, and helipads. Many are already operational on the Sohna–Dausa and MP sections.
The highway has solar-powered lighting throughout, rainwater harvesting every 500 metres, and approximately 2 million trees planted along the alignment.
